Is there a problem with parabens?

The use of parabens to preserve pharmaceutical and cosmetic products has been the subject of extensive scrutiny for many years. Controversial research on parabens has been published and heavily criticized leading to public concern and confusion about their safety. Regulatory groups around the world have approved the use of parabens in topical preparations with varying maximum usage levels depending on the products end use; however, with further research and review these levels are regularly changing. Despite this, parabens are one of the most widely used preservatives in pharmaceutical, cosmetics and personal care products and have been used with relatively low rates of irritation, sensitisation and allergic reactions, when applied to normal skin compared to alternatives.
